Shooting Bows and Arrows
What kid doesn’t want to try archery? Kids often get their first taste of archery at summer camp or in scouts. What if your child really loves archery and wants to practice more? In most residential areas, you can’t just shoot in the back yard.
There are several places to learn about archery in San Diego County. Most offer lessons for beginners. A few offer programs for those who wish to participate in competition archery. Many offer group events or birthday parties.
Movies like Lord of the Rings and Robin Hood always renew kids’ interest in shooting bows and arrows. Or maybe they went to a daycamp where they had the opportunity to try archery. Whatever caught their interest, now you need to find a place for them to explore this sport a little more. You can’t just set up a target in the back yard. Fortunately there are a few enthusiasts who keep the sport of youth archery alive and accessible in San Diego.
Traditional Archery
Archery is a very old sport. Although you’ll see a lot of fancy modern equipment used by competition archers, most beginners start out with a very simple recurve bow. Arrows may be made of fiberglass with plastic fletchings, they behave much the same as wood and feathers.
Archery Range
Finding a range can be a little tricky if you’re in a big city. Non-profit archery clubs often run a range, and sometimes public parks will set aside enough space for a range. If you can find an archery club, they’ll often offer classes or private lessons and have equipment available for your use. If you already have equipments and are just looking for empty archery ranges to practice on, that should be easier.
