Recreation Centers

Most cities in San Diego County have recreation departments which offer a variety of activities for children and adults. You probably receive their class schedules in the mail 3 or 4 times a year.

Recreation departments usually offer short term classes or sports clubs which typically last anywhere from 3-10 weeks. Some of their programs are conducted by their own staffs, while they partner with local businesses to offer others.

A short class like this is ideal to try out a new activity or business. When the class is over, there’s no commitment. You can sign up again next season, sign up for a class offered through a different business, or try something new.

Recreation departments often have unique offerings. If you’re looking for something new and you don’t see it in your city’s recreation department schedule, check with other nearby cities. A few will charge a little extra if you aren’t a resident of that city, but most will let you enroll.

If you don’t have their current catalog handy, you can go to their websites to check out the current offerings. We’re trying to put the different recreation department classes in the appropriate category on this website, but we may never completely reach this moving goal. So if you’re looking for something and you haven’t found it yet, check out the recreation departments near you.
